Below some authorities that govern the housing and urban development through out the country.

Delhi Developement Authority

The Delhi Development Authority was formed in 1957. It was created under the provisions of the Delhi development Act "to promote and secure the development of Delhi"

In 1911 the capital of India shifted from Kolkata to Delhi and this brought Delhi into focus. In 1912 Delhi was planned and structured by famous town planners- Edward Lutyens and Herbert Baker. Thus DDA was constituted with the primary objective of ensuring the development of Delhi in accordance with the plan

Housing Plans

In the federal structure of the Indian polity, the matters pertaining to the housing and urban development have been assigned by the Constitution of India to the State Governments. The Constitutions (74th Amendment) Act have further delegated many of these functions to the urban local bodies. The constitutional and legal authority of the Govt. of India is limited only to Delhi and other Union Territories and to the subject which State Legislatures authorise the Union Parliament to legislate.

Services Provided by DDA

DDA undertakes all projects in every sector. Be it residential, commercial, industrial, horticulture, institutional or recreational. DDA has so far got hold of 67354.88 acres of land and out of which 59504 acres have already been developed. 30713.95 acres have been utilized for residential purposes.

They construct houses according to the need and budget of the people. Flats provided by them have all types of facilities like electricity, water and sewage disposal and other communication facilities. A suitable example is Rohini. It has been planned and developed by DDA. All modern facilities and amenities have been provided.

Ministry of Urban Development

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is responsible for the development of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) which comprises a Megacity of Mumbai - the capital of Maharshtra State - and rapidly growing hinterland. MMRDA was set up on the 26th January, 1975 under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority Act, 1974 Goverment of Maharashtra as an apex body for planning and co-ordination of development activities in the Region.

Bangalore Development Authority

Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) was constituted on 16 January 1976 under an Act of the State Legislature. This Authority combined in itself the planning functions of the City Planning Authority and developmental functions of C.I.T.B. The Bangalore Development Authority is the planning and development Agency for the Bangalore Metropolitan Area.

Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority

CMDA is a (Town) Planning Authority constituted under the Tamil Nadu Town and Country Planning Act 1971.It is headed presently by the Hon'ble Minister for Housing as its Chairman.It prepares development plans viz. Master Plan/ Detailed Development Plans for spatial development of Chennai Metropolitan Area, with a public consultation process. It identifies, formulates and implements projects including those envisaged in the plans. It also regulates developmental activity in accordance with the rules.It co-ordinates and monitors projects executed through Government Agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations and Community based Organizations.

Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority

Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMA), is the statutory planning and development authority for the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA) under provision of the West Bengal Town and Country (Planning & Development) Act, 1979. Initially formed under a Presidential Ordinance in 1970, it is today the agency for planning, promoting and developing the KMA.
